Cutting down large numbers of trees is “worse than killing a single human being”,says Supreme Court

Amaravati: The Supreme Court has said that cutting down a large number of trees is “worse than killing a single human being”. The Supreme Court has expressed its displeasure over the felling of around 454 trees in the Taj Trapezium zone without taking any permission. A bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justices Abhay Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan has imposed a hefty fine on the owner of Dalmia Farms for cutting down trees, imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh per tree for each of the 454 trees cut down. The Supreme Court has commented that it will take at least 100 years to restore greenery to the places where trees have been cut down. Court made harsh comments, saying that there is no need to show any pity or mercy towards those who harm the environment. Similarly, the Supreme Court ordered the accused to undertake plantation work near the Taj Trapezium Zone.
