Young woman commits suicide after being forced to convert to Islam
Amaravati: Sona Eldos (23), a young woman pursuing a teacher training course (TTC) in Ernakulam district of Kerala, committed suicide.
The deceased’s mother, Bindulu, a maid in their household, alleged that her boyfriend Ramiz and his family members pressured her to convert to Islam in order to marry him, which is why their daughter committed suicide.
Sona Eldos from Kothamangalam, Kerala, committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence on Saturday. Initially, the police registered a case of unnatural death. However, after a suicide note written by the deceased was found, a case was registered under Section 69 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which deals with “physical assault and mental harassment for conversion”.
Converting to religion:- Sona Eldos meets a young man named Ramiz, and it turns into a love affair. The two decide to get married. It is reported that Ramiz took Sona to their home on the pretext of registering the marriage, where Ramiz and his family members threatened Sona that the marriage would only take place if she converted to Islam. Sona stated in her suicide note that Ramiz forced her to convert to their religion.
The story has been going on for a long time:- Sona’s mother said that Ramiz’s family had previously proposed marriage and insisted that Sona convert to their religion for the marriage. She said that Sona initially accepted this out of love, but refused after seeing Ramiz’s immoral dealings. She revealed that her daughter loved Ramiz very much, but for a long time she had been trying to convert him. Unable to bear their harassment, Sona decided that she would not convert under any circumstances, said the maid Bindu in an interview with the media. Bindu said that Sona was locked in a room and Sona’s brother Basil was also beaten.
Sona wrote details about the torture she faced in her suicide note. The police then arrested Ramiz.
