They failed to recognize the massive lead NDA had achieved. Eight exit polls in 2014 predicted an average of 283 seats for the NDA and 105 for the UPA. But in this election, NDA alliance got 336 seats and UPA got 60 seats. In that election, BJP won 282 seats while CONG won 44 seats.
Exit polls in 2019?
There have been many instances where exit poll predictions have been distorted. Many questions have also been raised about the credibility of these institutions. As there is a possibility of wrong predictions in exit polls, agencies usually announce exit polls with a margin of error. In 2019, exit polls predict that NDA will get 306 seats and UPA 120 seats. But the NDA won most of the seats beyond their expectations. In the 2019 elections, NDA got 353 seats and BJP got 303 seats. UPA got 93 seats, CONG got 52 seats in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The 2024 Lok Sabha elections were not between the NDA and UPA but between the NDA and the newly formed opposition alliance ‘I.N.D.I.A’. Before these elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had set a target of crossing 400 seats for the NDA to win. At the same time, BJP is expected to win 370 seats on its own. CONG, which initially announced that it will not participate in the exit polls discussions on news channels, later changed its decision and decided to participate in the discussions.
