Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone of Shinkun Law Tunnel
Amaravati: Prime Minister Modi and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh jointly laid the foundation stone of the “Shinkun La Tunnel” which will completely change the face of Ladakh, from the stage of Kargil Diwas. The Ministry of Defense approved the construction of this tunnel in February last year.
If this tunnel becomes available, it can be easily reached from Manali to Leh via Darcha-Padum-Nimmu in all weather conditions. The Border Roads Organization will construct this 4.1 km long tunnel at an altitude of 15,800 feet for the Shinkun La Pass route. This twin-tube tunnel project will cost around Rs. It is estimated to cost 1,681 crore. The length of Darcha-Padum-Nimmu road is 297 km. There is already a black top double road for 100 km on this route. The distance between Manali and Leh will not change much due to the construction of the new road. But it is possible to travel throughout the year without being affected by snow. It will be easier to supply food, arms and medicines to the Indian Army in Ladakh, Kargil and Siachen sectors. The Shinkun La tunnel, which has cross passages every 500 meters, will take at least 2 years to complete. The “Shinkun La Tunnel” will set the record for the world’s highest tunnel, surpassing the “Mi La Tunnel” in China at 15,590 feet. If this tunnel is completed, the economic and social development in Ladakh will be faster, said the concerned official.
