Supreme Court refuses to stay the legality of the Waqf Bill
Interim verdict tomorrow..
Amaravati: The Supreme Court on Wednesday began hearing petitions challenging the legality of the Waqf Bill recently passed by the central government. The hearing was conducted by a bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice KV Vishwanathan. 10 petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the legality of the Waqf Bill. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued on behalf of the petitioners.
Several state governments have filed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking to hear their arguments before the hearing of the petitions challenging the Waqf Board Amendment Act. The states that have filed petitions include the governments of Assam, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Maharashtra. These states have filed a petition in the Supreme Court upholding this law.
The government has also made laws regarding inheritance matters related to Hindus, and Parliament has also made laws for the Muslim community, right? CJI Sanjeev Khanna questioned what was wrong with this.
CJI Sanjiv Khanna commented that Article 26 gives the meaning of secularism and it applies to all religions.
After hearing the arguments, the Supreme Court refused to stay the legality of this Waqf Bill. He said that an interim verdict will be given tomorrow.
