Supreme Notices to Center on Legalization of Gay Marriage
Amaravati: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Center to respond to the petition within four weeks after Hyderabad-based same-sex couples approached the Supreme Court seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriage under the Special Marriage Act. A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli conducted a hearing on their petition. Homosexuals Suprio Chakraborty and Abhay Dong claimed in the petition that the right to marry the person of their choice also applies to LGBTQ+ citizens. Suprio Chakraborty and Abhay Danglu have been living together in Hyderabad for 10 years. Last year (2021) 9th anniversary was celebrated in the presence of parents, family and friends in the month of December. Members of the LGBTQ+ community urged the Supreme Court to enforce their fundamental rights to marry whomever they choose. A Public Interest Litigation was filed under Article 32 of the Constitution of India. Members of the LGBTQ+ community sought equal rights with other citizens. Lawyers Arundhati Kattu and others filed a petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of the couple.
