17 people died when under construction railway bridge collapsed at Mizoram
Amaravati: 17 workers were killed when a railway bridge under construction suddenly collapsed in Sairang area, 21 km from Aizawl in Mizoram. Concern is being expressed that many people are trapped under the debris of the bridge. The police said that 35 to 40 workers were at work when the accident took place around 10 o’clock in the morning, 17 dead bodies were recovered from the rubble, and the whereabouts of many more are yet to be ascertained.
Responding to this tragedy, Mizoram CM Joranthanga expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock over this incident. An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh has been announced from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to the families of the deceased. The Prime Minister’s Office has released a statement that Rs.50,000 will be given to the injured.
Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnav responded, “It is sad that such an incident has taken place. It has been revealed that the railway department will provide Rs.10 lakhs to the families of the deceased and Rs.2 lakhs ex gratia to the injured.
Rescue operations are going on at the collapsed bridge.
