Anil Chauhan appointed as Chief of Defense Staff

Amaravati: Center has appointed retired Lt General Anil Chauhan as Chief of Defense Staff (CDS). After the untimely death of Bipin Rawat, the Center chose Chauhan after a long deliberation on who should be chosen for the top military post. Chauhan served in the Indian Army in various capacities for nearly 40 years.  He has extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir, Northeast India, the Defense Ministry said. In 1981, he joined the 11 Gurkha Rifles of the Indian Army. Anil Chauhan is an alumnus of National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla, Indian Military Academy, and Dehradun. In the rank of Major General, the officer commanded an infantry division in the critical Baramula sector of the Northern Command. Later he commanded a corps in the North East as a Lieutenant General. He became the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command from September 2019. He held the responsibilities till his retirement from service in May 2021. Retired as Chief of Eastern Command on 31 May 2021. Even after retiring from the Army, Anil Chauhan has contributed to national security and strategic matters. Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan (Retd) has been awarded the Parama Vishishta Seva Medal, Uttam Vidhsha Seva Medal, Athi Vishishta Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishishta Seva Medal for his services in the Army.
