M.S.Swaminathan Passed Away
Amaravati: Renowned agronomist and geneticist M.S. Swaminathan (98), who is hailed as the father of India’s Green Revolution, passed away on Thursday. Swaminathan breathed his last today at 11 am at his residence in Chennai. Swaminathan was born on 7th August 1925 in Kumbakonam area of Madras Presidency. He developed many high yielding rice varieties in Indian agriculture.
Keeping in mind the farmers who are struggling with low income in agriculture, he taught many methods to increase the yield according to the climate of India. He won the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1971. Albert Einstein World Science Award in 1986, Swaminathan was awarded World Food Prize in 1987. After that he set up the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai. Swaminathan has three daughters with his wife Meena. Soumya Swaminathan is working as Chief Scientist at World Health Organization.
